How to drag subtasks to another location in the task list

This article will show you how to drag a subtask to another location in the same list. If you want to move a subtask to another project or want to use another method for moving subtasks, see the copy or move task help article.

Move a subtask to another top-level task that already has subtasks

1. Drag your subtask and move it under the destination parent task, so it's between that task and the next task on the list. This will turn it into a top-level task.
2. Expand the destination parent task to show its subtask (click the left caret button to expand).
3. Drag your original subtask (which is now a top-level task) into the destination parent either above or below any of its children tasks. You will notice it will indent as it becomes a subtask. Drop and you're done. (Watch the video above to see it in action.)

Move a subtask to another top-level task that has no subtasks

1. Drag your subtask and move it under the destination top-level task, so it's between that task and the next task on the list. This will turn it into a top-level task.
2. Open the destination task to its Description view.
3. Click create full subtask button. This will start creating a new subtask, but don't type any labels in this new subtask since we are using it as a dummy subtask as a way to make this top-level task think it has subtasks.
4. Now, drag your original subtask so it's just above the new subtask with no label and drop it there. This will automatically remove the new dummy subtask and only show you're one subtask. (Watch the video above to see it in action.)

Turn a top-level task into a subtask of another top-level task

1. Open the destination task to its Description view.
2. Click create full subtask button. This will start creating a new subtask, but don't type any labels in this new subtask. This is just a way to make this top-level task think it has subtasks.
3. Now, drag your other top-level task that you want to become a subtask into this target task so it's just above the new subtask with no label and drop it there. This will automatically remove the new dummy subtask and only show you're one subtask. (Watch the video above to see it in action.)

Drag your subtask into another slice

1. Drag your subtask over the destination pie slice and hold for a couple seconds until it selects that slice so you can see its content.
2. Then drag into your desired position using the steps above.
3. Note: If that destination slice has process boxes, you can continue to drag over a box and hold until that box selects, then you can continue to drag to a destination task, again, using the steps above. (Watch the video above to see it in action.)
