You can import a task list from a CSV file directly into a Pie project task list page. Export from Trello, Asana, Pivotal Tracker, JIRA, Microsoft Project (converted to Excel first), or any other tool that you want to convert over to Pie by using their export to CSV feature.
How-To Video
Prepare your CSV
- The first step is to export your task list from your other tool in CSV format. If it only exports to Excel, then from Excel you can save it as a CSV file.
- Open the CSV file and change the column header labels to exactly match the Pie required column headers. The following are the headers Pie will accept. They have to be spelled exactly the same. Here are the headers:
(By the way, these are the only fields that can be imported. Other items not listed below, such as dependencies cannot be imported.)
"Task". This is your task name or task label.
"Description". This is your task description or task notes.
"Assigned". This is for the assigned team member or task owners. If your importing task has multiple assigned people, they need to be in the same cell separated by commas. See below on how to set up your Pie project to accept the assigned names.
"Color Tag". If your CSV has a column for color coding, you can use one of these six colors — "purple", "blue", "orange", "gray", "green", or "red". If your CSV doesn't use this exact color labels, then first you should manually change your color labels to one of those colors or you can change the color label in your Pie project. If the color tag column data in your CSV file has a non-color label, such as "bug" or "feature", and that label matches an existing custom color tag label in your Pie project, then Pie will import that color text and turn on that color when it's imported in the project. For example, if a task in your CSV file has the Color Tag "bug" and in your Pie project, the color orange has the custom label "bug", then that task from the CSV would get that color orange in Pie. (See the video above.)
"Text Tag". If your CSV has a column for tag keywords, you can import that tag label into your Pie project. When importing, Your Pie project will auto create the tag keyword for you. For example, if your CSV has a task with the tag "needs design", then when it's imported into your Pie project, that project will automatically create a text tag labeled "needs design" and map it to that task.
"URL". If the CSV has a column for a URL link, such as the URL link for that task item in the other tool, you can import this URL and Pie will automatically attach it to the bottom of the description field in your Pie project task. - It's not necessary, but you should consider deleting all other non-matching columns in your CSV to make it easier to work with. Pie will only import the columns that match exactly the header labels shown in the previous step.
- Save your CSV.
- Now you're ready to go to the next step of importing into Pie.
Prepare your Pie project
- Open your project in Pie where you want to import the tasks.
- NOTE: You can import into a task list or process box, but not directly into a board (yet). If you want the tasks to go to a board column, import the tasks into another slice task list and then you can easily use our move feature to move them to the board.
- Assign the team members to your Pie project that are the same as those in your CSV assigned column if you choose to import those names. The CSV person name will need to be the same. For example, if the first name in Pie is "Rob", but the person't name in the CSV is "Robert", you will need to change "Robert" to "Rob" in your CSV for the assignment to import with the task.
- In your Pie project task list, create a dummy task (call it something like "temp").
- If you plan to import tasks with colors as noted above in the Color Tag explanation, then you should make sure your Pie project labels are changed to reflect what you want to import or make sure your CSV color tag labels match the ones in your Pie project. (See the video above.)
Import your CSV into your Pie project
- In the project list page, click the kabab (dot dot dot) icon in the upper right of the task list.
- Select "Import tasks" option.
- Your computer file selection window opens and select your CSV file from your computer.
- The tasks will then import to your list. (Remove your dummy temp task.)
- That's it!
