Pie is designed with modularity and component based concepts. This is important for repeatable-type projects, such as in the systems integration industry where consulting firms re-use their methods and frameworks across clients. The copy and move "Lego" approach for re-usability as described below is one of Pie's modular concepts.
This article will show you how to copy or move tasks from or to another location. There are two methods, the Pull Method and the Push Method. This page will explain both methods. You can use the Pull Method across and between projects and recipes. The Push Method is only for across projects or across recipes, but not between each.
Pull Method — Copy task list from a process box or slice location
How-to Video
This feature works across both projects and recipes. Use this method when you want to pull in (re-use) a task list from a slice or a process box that's located somewhere else in another project or recipe.
The following image shows you where to find the copy feature using the Create List from Other buttons. One is under a newly created slice. The other is under a newly created process box.
With this option, once you pick where it's coming from, you can decide to what components to include or exclude, such as task descriptions, assigned roles, etc, as shown here:
Push Method — Copy or move task lis to another box or slice location
How-to Video
This model is helpful when you want to individual select certain tasks or all of the tasks and copy or move them to another location. You can also use this method to copy or move tasks in a Board view. One difference between this push method and the pull method is with the push method you can only copy or move within project or within recipes, but not between projects and recipes. If you want to copy the tasks between projects and recipes, then use the pull method in the above section.
How to copy or move tasks
- On a project (or recipe) page with tasks, click the kabab (dot dot dot) icon in the upper right of the task list.
- In the popup, click "Copy or Move tasks to another location..."
- At the top of the task list you will now see a "Select copy or move to" search field. Click in the search field and select either this project or another project as your destination.
- Click the search field and select where you would like to copy or move the tasks. If the destination has slices and processes boxes, they will be listed for selection.
- Next you will see check boxes to the left of each task. Click on the ones you would like to move. The very top check box is a select all box.
- Lastly, click the green COPY or MOVE button. That's it.
Subtasks and boards
Parent task with subtasks can be copied or moved to another Slice or Process Box, but they cannot be copied or moved to a Board as a parent/child group. However, you can copy or move only subtasks without the parent to the Board by unchecking the parent and checking only the subtask copy or move check boxes. This limitation is because the Board doesn't support subtasks.
What task items are moved in this push method
Task items that ARE moved:
- label and description
- checklist items
- progress
- files
- people assignment - moved only if destination already had that person assigned
- role assignment - moved only if destination already had that role assigned
- subtasks for task list and process box tasks, not for boards (see Subtasks and boards above)
Task items that are NOT moved:
- data fields
- dependencies
- tags
