Milestone features works with the following two premium organization versions. You can upgrade your workspace to an organization for these and other premium features.
- Pro version: You can set milestones to a task.
- Enterprise version: Same as Pro, but with dependencies, you can use the auto mark done from predecessor tasks marked done (see below). You can also view the Milestones-Only report.
You can set up milestones in either project or recipe tasks. NOTE: The milestone task's start date is hidden. If you add a milestone in a recipe, that task no longer will have a duration. This is by design since milestone tasks don't have start dates, only due dates.

When to use a milestone
Use a milestone when you have an important event to hit, such as a goal or objective in a project. For example, you could have a list of tasks on how to set up the project plan. Then a final milestone would be that the plan is done and approved. As a tip, use milestones sparingly. Too many milestones will dilute their punch. A milestone is added as a task with a color tag set to milestone.
How to add a milestone
- Open a task to the task's color tag view either by opening the task and clicking the tag icon in the icon menu bar or hover over a task and click to the very left edge of the task bar.
- Once the color tag view of a task is open, click the black diamond milestone option at the bottom. (Note that this is the only color tag that cannot be renamed.)
- Click the question icon to see a short help tip.
- Click Close.
- The task will now have a black diamond indicator straddling the left edge.
Milestone auto update from predecessor dependency
With the Enterprise version, you can use dependencies. A nice feature with the milestone feature is an automatic progress update. To see this work, create a dependency link between your milestone task in a previous predecessor.
For example, let's say the predecessor task is "Approve plan", which is an action for someone assigned to approve the plan. And you milestone task is called "Plan approved", which is not an assigned action, but rather a statement of completion. When the assigned person marks the predecessor task "Approve plan" done, Pie will automatically mark the successor "Plan approved" as done.
Another note is when you tag a task as a milestone and that task is linked to a previous task with a dependency link, that milestone's dependency will change to finish-to-finish dependency type. This is because the milestone task doesn't have a start date and its due date will be driven by its predecessor's due date.
You can assign multiple predecessor task links to one task. If it's a milestone, the milestone will not auto update to done until all predecessors are marked done.
